The best in Jyväskylä Finland

JYVÄSKYLÄ  IN MY MIND                                       EN   FIN

The main street Kauppakatu
I spend my winter holiday in Middle Finland, Jyväskylä. The wheather was extreamly cold, but atmosphere was warm. Based on my story, you will spend a wonderful vacation in Jyväskylä in winter alone, with friends or with family. You will find a place to celebrate a wedding, an engagement, a birthday party or any party or take a little escape from everyday life. One of the best things in Jyväskylä is, that everything is in walking distance. My best in Jyväskylä -list is at the end of the blog.

They use to say that Jyväskylä is Finlands Athens. Here has been a teacher education since the beginning of history. The university, especially the sport science is known worldwide. If you climb to the tower of Harju to look over the city, you´ll see the landscape of architect Alvar Aalto, and understand from where his inspiration has arised.  Useful netpage https://www.alvaraalto.fi/en/visit/.
Another famous architect Wivi Lönn has also left her signs on Jyväskyläs townpicture. Wivi Lönn was the first female architect in Finland, who fonded her own office. She was taken as an ”extra student” at the Polytechnic College (only for men), where he graduated in 1896. In Jyväskylä there are about 20 buildings from Wivi Lönn, she designed almost the whole of Puistokatu and restored, among other things, an old library building, now housed in the picturesque cultural cafe and hostel, The Local Culture hostel & Cafe, Seminaarinkatu 32. Café founders Rinna Valjakka and Minna Suominen met each other when they stadied in Jyväskylä. They noticed that they had a same dream. The dream become concrete when they have rented this building, which had been empty for a couple of years. One of Jyväskylä's valuable buildings has been rescued for life. The house was built at the time of the Russian Revolution in 1851, originally as a granary to secure grain supply in bad harvests. Near the present Seminaarinkatu there was a "big road" that leaded to Tampere. There is still a cradle of original cobbled streets in front of the house. In 1916, the building was renovated and the National Library and the Jyväskylä Science Library moved in. The library moved away 1980 to its present location. After that the building has been the home of craftmuseum and management the University of Jyväskylä. The current owner of the building is Central Finland's Protected Museum Properties.

Jyväskylä City Hall (1899),the Neo-Renaissance building designed by the county architect Karl Viktor Reinius, is one of the few 19th century buildings in the center of Jyväskylä.
Jyväskylä is a lively cultural city also in the winter. Every day something is happening somewhere. The city theaterdesigned by Alvar Aalto was completed in 1982. There are 250 performances over the year, plays, concerts and performances to choose from. The inhabitants of Jyväskylä and whole county will love the theater.

The Jyväskylä Symphony is currently being lead by conducter and pianist Ville Matvejeff.

The town theater by Alvar Aalto

The best law in Finland, the Library Law, obliges cities and municipalities to maintain a library. I always go to the community library in the first place. Here you get allt tips what is going on just now. The library in Jyväskylä is huge and exceptionally suitable for spending time. There are numerous corners where you can get buried for hours.

My vacation travel hit the coldest days of winter, but it is not a problem in modern cities. In Jyväskylä, there is a shopping center in every corner, where you get your cheeks warm again. Forum, Jyväskeskus, Torikeskus and Kolmikulma are in the heart of the city.
In the center you will find interesting small shops, art galleries, cafés and museums, the spirit of the creative city. Jyväskylä has a strong design and craft tradition. The Finnish Museum of Crafts is located on the mainstreet. Museums shop Taito (Skill), is very popluar, even the children love to wander there admiring all kinds of cute things.
Toivola yards blacksmith.
Toivola's old yard, Cygnaeuksenkatu 2 is absolutely worth for visit also in wintertime. There are also some shops full of local handcraft, museum shop and blacksmith.
Spa lovers can go to Laajavuori Spa, where you can stay three hours at the same price. I prefer local swimming centres because they are cheaper and not far from spa services. Swimming center Aalto Alvari, has been recently renovated and refurbished. I spent a pleasent afternoon with water splashes and bubbles. There are two large pools for the kids with childrens slides, and one extra pool for babies and little ones unable to swim. The swimming center is part of the university campus. Shower facilities are the widest I've ever seen. I almost got lost there. The lock and inlet of the cabinets are handled with an electronic bracelet. The cafe has paper mugs, which I did not like.

The art exhibition and museum tours are easy to wear all day long. Jyväskylä Artists' Club has its own exhibition hall Becker, Seminaarinkatu 28. The Art Museum is right in the center and the Galleria Ratamo in an old locomotive near the travel center.

The streets are usually one-way, which makes it difficult to reach the destination from time to time. I recommend walking on foot. For public transport, you can download internal traffic schedules and routes to your mobile. https://jyvaskyla.digitransit.fi

Boutique hotel Yöpuu
There are many hotels in Jyväskylä. I have lived almost all of them at some time in my life, and I do not find anything to complain about. However, in this blog I pass all the chain hotels and restaurants. They are easy to find anyway

The guesthouse Harmooni (Accordion), the newcomer, just opposite the travel center, an art nouveau building, and old accordion factory, a provincial conservation destination. The names of the apartments are musical, Piano, Forte and Melody. Harmooni has also offered a new restaurant option.

Boutique hotelYöpuu, Jyväskylä's first boutique hotel. The Pöllövaari restaurant is also worth mentioning.
The LocalCulture hostel & Cafe, Seminaarinkatu 32, The most recent arrival. Cheap accommodation close to the university, only a few rooms now, but getting more in summertime.
Houseboat, only in summertime. A rental room with which you can sail from port to port. Home Port Jyväskylä
Apartments in Jyväskylä when you want to live in your own space in the middle of the city.

KAHVILOITA

Waffels waffle with salmon
Café Vaffeli, Shoppingcenter Forum, 2nd floor.  Asemakatu
Vaffeli offers both salty and sweet waffle slices. There is also a vegan alternative. Location within a mall is not the best, but it's good to be where customers are. It seems to be very popular, and not in vain.
Wilhelmina'spatisserie, excellent breakfast place, here I visited every day.
Teeleidi, for tealovers, Kramsunkatu 1,
Café Miriams, frenchstyle
Produces local food and organic, cheesecake without gelatin.
The LocalCulture hostel & Cafe, Seminaarinkatu 32

Konditoria Wilhelmiinassa kävin aamiaisella joka aamu.
Aamiainen on ihan perussettiä, on lämpimät nakit ja lihapulla, puuro,

mehut, karjalanpiirakat, munavoit, jugurtit, leikkeleet, suolaista ja makeaa.

RESTAURANTS

Figaro /Espresso-flavored
 mushroom soup and aura goldia
Mostly the menus of better restaurants seemed so much the same, that it was hard to pick one of the others. Prices are also quite alike.

RestaurantKissanviikset, Puistokatu 3, Have been there 50 years. Here I go whenever I want a good experience.
Harmooni ofguesthouse Harmooni, I did not have time to try, but look promising.
VesilinnaRestaurant, Harju Tower, the best view
Harald'sRestaurant, Kauppakatu 33, I cannot help it but Viking restaurant Harald has conquered my heart. They have 8 restaurants in Finland. The service and the menu will remain consistently good year after year. The staff is in line with the spirit of the place. They feel like enjoying the medieval role of work along with the actual work. I take all my foreign friends to Harald.
Restaurant &Winebistro Figaro, Asemakatu 2/4 Quite popular, but a bit complicated menù for my taste.
